The Online Grant Application will be made available on this website beginning June 15, 2013 and will remain open until the end of the day on August 31, 2013. No applications will be accepted after this date.

Organizations who applied for a grant in 2012 will receive an email with preliminary information in early June.



June 15, 2013 – Grant Application Open and Available Online

July 31, 2013 – Last Day to Request Special Permission from Grant Chairman or Board of
Directors in order to apply for Grant for Applicants that are located outside the above specified Geographic Region (see below).

August 31, 2013 – Last Day to Submit Grant Application for all Organizations. No extensions will be given.

September 14, 2013 – Grant Hearing Reminder Email with Hearing Schedule sent to Applicants

September 29, 2013 – Baltimore Region Hearings (Location TBD)

October 5, 2013 – Washington Region Hearings Part 1 (Location TBD)

December 2, 2013 – Notice to Applicants of Approval for Grant (amount not disclosed)

Brother Help Thyself, Inc has established basic criteria for organizations who wish to apply for, and receive, a grant in 2013.


The applicant organization has IRS 501(c)3 Status or is pending receipt of an IRS application for nonprofit status.  Applicants awaiting receipt of an IRS application may apply for a grant but will need to provide proof of IRS 501(c)(3) status before we award your grant in 2013.


Historically, Brother, Help Thyself, Inc has awarded grants to charities located in the Census Designated, Combined Baltimore-Washington Statistical Area, composed of specific, designated counties of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia as indicated on the below map. (Click on the map to view a larger version.)

Organizations primarily located outside of this region may still apply for a grant from Brother Help Thyself, Inc.  However, a representative of the organization must contact the Grant Chairman or a Member of the BHT Board of Directors no later than the end of the day, July 30, 2013 in order to obtain “special permission” to apply for a grant. Failure to obtain this permission prior to this date may disqualify your organization from applying.  The BHT Board of Directors will have final say as to whether or not an organization applying for a grant provides services in the region historically served by Brother Help Thyself, Inc.

Historically, Brother, Help Thyself has awarded grants to charities located in the marked areas.



To receive a grant form Brother Help Thyself, Inc an organization must have a gross revenue of less than $2 million during the previous fiscal year.  Please note that this is the revenue for the entire local, non-profit organization and not for a particular project or subdivision of a larger organization. This includes local chapters of national/international organizations.  The IRS Form 990 for the parent organization and the fiscal information for the local chapter are BOTH required as part of the grant application.



All Grant Applications must be received no later than the end of the day on August 31, 2013. No exceptions to this guideline will be made under any circumstances and any applications received after this time will not be considered for review.


Once a completed application is received from an eligible organization, a representative(s) from that organization is required to attend a mandatory Grant Hearing on the following dates:

September 29, 2013 in Baltimore, MD (Location TBD)

October 5, 2013 and October 6, 2013 in Washington, DC (Location TBD)

The Grant Hearing Schedule will be made available on the Brother Help Thyself, Inc website and by email to the primary contact person for each organization no later than September 14, 2013.



Organizations will be notified of their receipt of a grant from Brother Help Thyself, Inc no later than December 2, 2013. The amount of the grant will not be disclosed at that time.

The Grant Award Ceremony is January 25, 2014 (location TBD). The the case of inclement weather the ceremony will be moved to February 1, 2014.

All organizations, regardless of whether or not they are receiving a grant, are invited to attend. Please contact the Grant Chairman if a representative from your organization will not be able to be present for the ceremony.
